In Ethiopia’s Afar Region, one of the hottest and most inhospitable areas on Earth, Australian nurse Valerie Browning and Austrian aid worker Erfried Malle work alongside Afar communities facing drought, poverty, and the challenges of a nomadic way of life. Through the Afar Pastoralist Development Association and SONNE International, projects provide water reservoirs, replace livestock lost to drought, and train mobile health workers to carry out vaccinations and assist with childbirth.
